Ah, good ol’ Outriders: a PlayStation 5 and PS4 shooter that we, well, didn’t like when we played the demo earlier this month. Our resident looter shooter boffin Robert Ramsey suggested that the release is in for a “rough launch” when it deploys on 1st April – well, as far as PlayStation platforms go, how does a “non-existent launch” sound?
After strong rumours over the weekend, an increasingly aggressive Microsoft has scooped the third-person outing for its Game Pass service, meaning subscribers will be able to download it for free* as part of their monthly fee. To our knowledge, this is the first time the Team of Green has netted a day one third-party release, although there may be other examples we’re overlooking.
Whatever the case, with the PlayStation version commanding a £59.99/$59.99 price point, this title looks like impressively bad value on Sony’s system right now. Is there anyone out there still planning on purchasing it at full-price? Were you even interested in the game to begin with? And could this set a precedent for future releases being included with Microsoft’s subscription, where the PlayStation version is full-price?
We can only imagine publisher Square Enix is looking at the pre-order numbers and quaking in its boots, in which case a day one Game Pass release may resurrect its fortunes. It presumably comes with a big cheque from the Redmond firm to boot. Nevertheless, if this is going to become an recurring trend for third-party titles and not an anomaly, Sony’s going to find itself in hot water fast.

This is going to be $19.99 in record time.
This will be on PS Plus before you know it
@Rob_230 We should do bets on which month. I'm going to say... August?
Gamepass looks like a better deal with every day. Sony still seems to be dominating the video game market, but it'll be interesting to see in the coming months/years how this changes, and will Sony have to tweak their current subscription services to rival it?
@get2sammyb I'll raise you July 🤣
Honestly.... I didn't even know this game even existed until today....
I just tried the demo on PS5 this weekend. Not bad, kinda fun, good frame rate, but pretty ho-hum graphics. Not a full price value, and obviously this appears to be pretty universal. If Sony attaches it to Now or Plus, it has a chance, otherwise as the article says, it’s going to be pretty DOA outside of the Xbox ecosystem.
I thought it was decent, if a bit generic. It was like the uber masculine metalhead love child of Gears of War and Destiny/Division.
There will be a market for it, I'm sure, but the demo didn't give a great impression of just how expansive the game will prove in the long run. It's not a live service game, so it will need to be as replayable as something like Diablo 3, with its rifts and best in class grind (for a non-service game).
That's why I said it's really a good time for sony to raise their 1st party titles price when their competitor is giving many new games for "free" on their subscription service? 😕
Also I like outriders demo, it's fun and the B movie-like story is interesting, I don't want to buy it for $60 if it's available "free" on others console though. Maybe I'll wait when it's discounted to $20.
The demo was pretty good..nothing brilliant but like the avengers nowhere near as bad as people make out..i'll buy it when its cheaper as i did with avengers..
I loved the demo despite some rough points. Hopefully it is good at release as this is one of the games I'm most excited for on PS5 at the moment.
@BranJ0 I think we will hear something this year - Jim Ryan said that Sony have something in mind. Unless it is the new policy of putting games on PS Plus day 1 - like Bugsnax, Worms, Destruction Allstars, Control, Maquette, Oddworld etc is what he was alluding to.
As ever, the best thing about competition is how it drives platform holders to do better. Sony will come up with something, im sure
@arzis100193 Are you still planning to buy at full-price, then? Obviously just curious really. Does this news not deter you a bit?
Square can’t afford much more bombs after Avengers. I’m sure they’re happy with the money upfront.
Game looked terrible from the get-go. I imagine mid-70’s metacritic & will be be <£10 by Black Friday.
Free vs £60..... Hmmmmm
I must admit, there was no way I was going to buy this at launch - it didn't look worth the admission fee. It was one of those games that I would potentially purchase some time after launch, depending on reviews, friends playing etc.
However, now its coming to Game Pass on Day 1, its something that I will probably download and play. It certainly looks perfect for Game Pass (or PS+/GwG too).
You've written that this will be free on GP and placed an asterix next to the word 'free' but there's no follow-up on why the asterix is there.
Would it not be simpler to just say you can download it on GP as we all know its not free in any sense.
I liked the demo, I'll wait for reviews but I think i might get it anyway.
@Hyperluminal It's just a gag, and it literally says it right there in the sentence: "meaning subscribers will be able to download it for free* as part of their monthly fee".
Momentum is with MS at the moment. Will be interesting to see how Sony responds, especially in the wake of the Bethesda exclusives announcement
@get2sammyb a gag? Fair enough Sammy, forgive me I didn't get it. Thanks for the reply.
@Hyperluminal yea... I guess now paying a monthly/yearly subscription equals "free".... the world we live on is becoming a sad one day by day.
It makes me wonder how much Microsoft paid for the day 1 Gamepass availability, is it really worth the loss of sales on other platforms? Or did People Can Fly start seeing pre-orders lowering after the demo? This is the sort of info that I'm really curious about.
Well, in my case they just lost the sale of a full game in exchange for 1 month of gamepass using VPN (so I can nab it for 1$ instead of full price as well). I wonder how many people will do this as well.
I was gonna pre-order tomorrow since im kinda enjoying the demo depsite its rough spots, its a good solid shooter with a lot of potential, but yeh after this Gamepass news, im going to wait until it tumbles in price.
@rpg2000 well I have noticed there a tendency to classify things as free that are being subscription pay walls; not just GP, all of them. For example HUKD is forever getting deals posted for Netflix ect as 'free' films being added ect 🤷♂️
I like the demo.it was a fun game.word up son
I will be playing it on Game Pass. It never really looked interesting but if it pops into my game collection on 1st April, I will definitely be giving it a go.
Don't forget how great Plus has been the last few months too, we have had Control PS5, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Maquette, the under rated Concrete Genie, Bugsnax.
I would advise anybody now just to buy the new consoles ( if you can) and subscribe to Plus and Game Pass, you never need to buy a game again. I would also advise to stay away from ps now, as you really don't need it alongside the other 2 services. Be different if Sonys exclusives were on it, even if they were added a year or so after release like EA Play.
Happy days! I enjoyed the demo but not enough to buy for full price. I've got 2 years of Game Pass Ultimate stacked up and it pretty much paid for itself within a few months with games like Doom Eternal and Dirt 5. Crazy value.
@Athrum I think it's probably a mixture of Microsoft stumping up some serious cash and pre-order numbers being in the gutter.
While it's obviously a different scenario because it's a first-party game, I imagine a similar thing happened to Destruction AllStars. Once they started seeing the numbers, they were like... Er, let's just put it in the subscription!
Game Pass: A world where game ownership no longer matters and encourages game prices to race to the bottom.
Also when I say both consoles, I am including the little Series S, which to be honest has impressed me as much as the ps5, despite the obvious resolution difference. My One X which sits alongside the Series S is still there to play the older games in 4k, but I haven't actually used it since getting the S as the quality of life improvements are so mad.
I still believe the cheap price of GamePass will eventually coincide with a quality drop of those games that are included on it.
It’s fine right now, but eventually, it will be associated with mediocrity.
I do NOT support brand new games being included on a subscription service.
I enjoyed the demo, even if it was a bit shaky with stuff like lip-synch... But yeah, I'm not going to wait for it to drop on PS+ because I ain't paying full whack for something someone else can pick up for a quid and play through in a month or less.
@Rob_230 Oh I didn't realise he alluded to them having anything in the works, that's promising! And absolutely, I like Sony's first party games to much to ever switch to Microsoft, but I've been generally happy about the recent success of gamepass as it means Sony will have to step up their game to keep up!
A lot of reviewers reacted negatively to it, so I was worried about how well this would do. Launching on Game Pass is probably a safe move.
Plus, it feels like MS are still making waves. I wonder will Sony feel the need to react.
And could this set a precedent for future releases being included with Microsoft’s subscription, where the PlayStation version is full-price?
Any and all Bethesda/id games?
@get2sammyb I already pre-ordered this game at a discount a few weeks back. O well I'll still enjoy it nonetheless
@Rob_230 Control wasn't day 1. It was released over a year before being added to +.
after your review of the demo, I was never going to buy it anyway.
passing on this one; already play destiny a lot and im loving the changes with darkness, plus im trying to clear my backlog. next game im be buying probably be nier replicant. edit i usually buy games from shop to/ 365 games/base and usually get 10/15% off the price anyway
I’m sure the Xbox Gamepass offer stipulates that the games mustn’t be on any competing subscription service. So there’s that.
Personally I would never buy a game full price, on any system, but I’d also not play this game even for free. I’m more time poor than money poor.
@PhhhCough no Bethesda games are coming to Playstation but you can keep lying to yourself bud
After the Demo either free on Gamepass or with PS PLUS is the only way this game has any kind of chance. I felt sick with the wierd camera shaking constantly.
@PhhhCough be prepared for games looking like Crackdown 3 for life! GP cannot sustain the industry.
This is MS praying it all turns into customers it cannot carry on because it is basicly putting money in a bag & setting fire to it.
Thought the demo was OK but not up to something of the division 2's quality. Way too many cut scenes for me. Was thinking of getting it when it goes on sale cheap.
MS are certainly throwing their money around at the mo. In one way I think it's good because it gives Sony some very strong competition, which hopefully we as PlayStation owners benefit from with better services(I think psplus shows the effects already). But I do wonder what MS's end game is, how far they are willing to spend. They keep buying more studios, more games for gamepass, effectively try and kill the competition. Then when they have the market they can charge what they like for gamepass and if you want to play most of the games you'll have to pay it.
No loss really as the demo was awful and let's be honest without gamepass this game would be dead on arrival, physical and digital sales are going to be abysmal
If you buy this turd, you deserve to get hosed.
@Athrum I think Square Enix saw what happened to Marvel's Avengers and also how Fallout 76 was saved by Game Pass. Then contacted Microsoft for day 1 Game Pass for Outriders.
This doesn’t feel very different from Sony launching Rocket League and Fall Guys to build a player base.
I see a lot of what Xbox will be providing is live services type games for Gamepass. While I think it’s a great way to dip your toe in to see if you like it, it makes no sense in the long term play these time sink games on gamepass. How do you get the supposed value of gamepass, when your paying a monthly sub to play a live service game that you will eventually need to purchase when it is pulled from service? Seems like you’ll end up paying more to play the game.
I'm not sure this was ever going to sell well. The demo didn't do it any favours.
Why the heck does it matter how you can get it on xbox? I have a PlayStation, not an eggsbox. Isn't Oddworld game coming free on PS+ next month? Are pure xbox and Co going to cry also?
PS+ Title in May
@Jayofmaya Control Ultimate Edition was released at launch on plus for PS5
@yellowdog05 I get your arguments and for some people that will be true.
For me it's the same as Netflix, sometimes I'm hitting it really hard and it's absolutely worth it, other times I'm not watching or playing that much but I don't cancel as the monthly fee isn't too bad.
@BranJ0 Here you go, Sammy wrote an article around the time of the PS5 launch. It doesnt tell us much, but it does tell us that Sony are aware of the need to innovate and react:
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2020/11/sony_on_ps5s_response_to_game_pass_there_is_news_to_come_but_not_today
Pc: top seller, based on preorders
Xb: day one release, on gp
Sony: full price, game sucks, boo
Sounds like some butt hurt, that's all. If you weren't gonna play this to begin with, then why so mad?
I was never interested in this game, so I don't remotely care it's free on Game Pass - I probably wouldn't even download it if it was on Plus. Frankly, this is probably a game that needs this kind of exposure. It's really hard to launch a live service game, especially when according to these comments. most avid gamers barely even know it exists - I hear the name Outriders and I think of old Sega games with similar names lol
Anyway, sure it's a "bad" deal at $60 on PS, but good for them. They need a player base to get going or it's going to be another Disintegration, or whatever that other weird FPS was that the studio just folded.
@YurtleTehTurtle That's fine, I just know personally that I'd probably wait expecting a big price drop if it was me.
Obviously if you're still looking forward to the game and planning to play day one, then there's nothing wrong with that. Was just curious how people felt about this really.
@PhhhCough No one's mad, we wrote the preview long before any of this was announced. We're still planning to review it and see if the final product is better than the demo, which we hope it is.
@get2sammyb you may not be "mad" but a lot of passive aggressiveness from the commentors.
@David187 riiiight..cause doom and doom eternal are crackdown 3 level games. Fanboy on.
@get2sammyb was not just Push Square who said it was poor as well some gamers really need to grow up a little.
@PhhhCough my god you do not understand what I'm saying because you see it with Xbox specs. got no energy for childish stuff like you are on adios!
Destruction All Stars 2.0
@JJ2
I agree. As long as PlayStation keep making the best exclusives year after year. Microsoft can overpay and rob themselves to their hearts content. Microsoft’s idea of trying to bully the market buy as much competition as possible is fruitile as long as Sony and Nintendo carry on making the best exclusives. Xbox as a standalone company must have shocking profit margins compared its rivals. Will it all pay off for Microsoft in the end, who knows?
This game is perfect for Xbox players match made in heaven Gears of Outriders
The Coalition should take notes
@Rob_230 That's brilliant news, thanks for linking the article!
The most bang average game i’ve played in years.
Its a gift for them that Xbox got it on GP, cause it’d be DOA otherwise
I think the games industry has kind of proven that as long as the games are there, gamers will pay. Nintendo has terrible services, terrible business practices and treats their customers like dirt...but people still buy all their junk. The one advantage that Sony and Nintendo have over Microsoft is numerous first party exclusives...which is why Microsoft went and bought out Bethesda.
I mean, if you can't make memorable gaming experiences yourself, just take the options away from gamers. Sony will still be fine, I'll still buy third party releases instead of renting them from gamepass but I'm SURE Microsoft is going to continue to jack up the price of GP as the value continues to go up.
Honestly I get the feeling PushSquare is going on with xbox news at this point. Games for Gold news next 😬
Well, it is the same as Outer Worlds.
Even when I decided to give Immortals Fenyx Rising and WatchDog a try - made more sense to just get Ubi+ for $14 for a month.
Even smaller games I got on my Switch I moved to PC GamePass. No point dropping $29.
Yikes! Sony is getting behind on this subscription thing I think...
Anyway, I'm happy to play this with Gamepass, I wouldn't waste 70 euros on this one, despite enjoying the demo
@PhhhCough calls folks passive aggressive then proceeds to be passive aggressive in the rest of his comment 🤔
@JJ2 it is odd when they have another site for that.
Owning both next gen platforms has it's advantages..
@David187 @JJ2 I don't see how it's not relevant news. The fact that it's full-price on one console and part of a subscription on the other, on the exact same day it launches on all systems, is definitely worth pointing out.
I think you're being facetious mentioning Games for Gold: obviously we wouldn't report on that unless something significant that was relevant to a PlayStation readership happened.
@get2sammyb I really liked what I played so unless reviews are truly abysmal, I probably will get it at full price. It being on Game Pass doesn't really matter to me as I won't be getting an Xbox Series X for at least another year or so.
If it isn't an april ps+ game, then it's dead to me!!!
Don't care, still buying it.
I'll still buy it at launch, Outriders and Monster Hunter are the only games I'm looking forward too for a bit. After playing the demo again after they patched it and the Dev's crystal clear communication to the consumer on forums. People Can Fly earned my purchases. Also it's loot game makes all the others look terrible in comparison.
Also I don't know if anybody else mentioned but, I don't think the PS4 and Switch versions of "The Outer Worlds" were all that affected.
You may need to check the definitions of "news" and "soapbox."
To me, all this says is GamePass is indeed the home of games I'd never play.
@get2sammyb
So it's an exclusivity of sort. Like someone said Rocket league when it came on PS+ or next month Oddworld game on ps+. Or a classic promotional offer from a brand vs another. The usual advantages for subscription and I again wonder if Purexbox is going to have an article about Oddworld then. Could as well merge the 2 sites.
I'm not being facetious as much as genuinely wondering why the news are so focused on xbox as if this is a multiplatform site.
@Kunfoostu Unlike Sony and all of their 3rd party exclusive deals (Destiny, COD, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Deathloop, Spiderman in Avengers, etc.) . Microsoft is starting to play the same game PlayStation has for years. And it is about time they start playing the 'game'.
deleted the demo after a couple of hours, thought it was dire and pretty juvenile too, and wouldn't play it for "free", even if they have fixed the nausea-inducing reach-for-the-toilet camera. i suspect it wasn't going to sell well on PS4/5 anyway, even if it wasn't on gamepass.
a month ago MS was out of touch, the villain of the industry, yadda yadda when it tried to up the price of xbox gold to £85 a year.. now it's all momentum, blah blah. make no mistake, gamepass is about turning service style games into hidden subscription games, where people are paying monthly without ever thinking if it's actually cost beneficial... i'm guilty of that with amazon prime. i watch stuff on it so intermittently, i probably don't really get value out of it. saying how much quantity is on a service never really made that much sense to me..
besides, sony probably blew an absolute truckload of money on getting next-gen GTA-V exclusive on PS+.. i doubt they're losing much sleep over outriders.
@JJ2 - a lot of the "reaction" and "soapbox" stuff here seems to be about pitting playstation against xbox.. it's pure populist baiting that generates the hits.. it's pretty easy to see that the comments sections on those are much much bigger than anything else. it sometimes got so toxic last summer (particularly when there was a notable lack of news about anything really) i stopped reading here for months. i really wish there was a filter for articles..
@Jarobusa Probably for the 360 times they invented this stuff.
@get2sammyb You are doing your best too stuff Xbox in my face every second on this site damn that PureXbox im sick of it.
@leucocyte
Ikr.
I don't want to throw stuff at the writers but it does sound hypocritical. Sites blaming gamers for console war but then that article about Ms and Sony s challenge to pick up the glove and so was definitely calling for war like response sort of.
@Flaming_Kaiser The people at the head of Xbox during the 360 years are long gone. There is new leadership and they tried to play 'nice' but see how that worked out for them? "Xbox has no games!" No longer is this true.
@JapaneseSonic - Hasn't translated into sales or interest in X|S? The Series consoles have been the biggest launch success in MS's console history.
As for all the Game Pass salt in general in these comments you guys sure are quick to forget that it was Sony who started all this free games for subs business on consoles when they revamped PS+ back in the PS3 days and began giving away day and date smaller titles and crushing Xbox Gold with blockbuster AAA freebies.
Sony: we’re going to raise our first party titles to £70
Microsoft: we’re going to offer value and 100’s of games for a small subscription and keep offering value each month.
I know which I prefer. Gamepass is pretty great.
Its strange I've never realized how many gamers suffer from motion sickness. Maybe I'm one of the few that don't
@Fenbops you got to be delusional if you don't think most if not all big publisher (that includes MS and Nintendo) aren't going to rise the game prices to £70 by next year.... also this isn't even comparable (subscription based services VS owing your game).
Stop living in LaLaLand already... for god's sake. And prepare for a price hike in subscription services in the near future as well (à la Netflix).
They'll be fine, if it's bad value on ps it's also bad value on PC as the gamepass version is "exclusive" to Xbox...
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out and maybe be seen as a case of if day one games effect sales elsewhere
@Jarobusa it is still true really. not one game has been made yet in the MS era with Bethesda we have all have those games available to us all still let's see what Indiana Jones does!
@RudeAnimat0r Its not a live service game.
@Fenbops if I get the games Sony makes or the games MS has I will pick Sony every time.
@David187 lol you must love Sony a lot. Do you own anything else other than a PlayStation?
Good thing I have them all and can get any game available on all the current consoles.
@pharos_haven Ok, it's still a MP loot game that will either thrive or die with or without a player base.
@Shigurui It is funny reading all the salty Sony fans on here complaining about Game Pass. I am pretty sure, if Sony offered a similar service with all their first party games being on "PlayStation Pass" day one, they would all sign up.
@get2sammyb not just this article but in general, it feels that way more than it should I guess? not having a dig at you just feels that way.
This isn’t really my type of game, but decided to give it a try with the demo...ended up really enjoying it and leveled up the four classes to the demo cap. Then I placed the pre-order...which I just canceled earlier today.
Not a big deal, but I’m not purchasing it at full price when the publisher doesn’t even value it that much. Maybe I’ll buy it down the road...or forget about it. But like I said, not a big deal with the games on my backlog and the others that are coming.
Always tough to justify when the competition is getting more value for the same or less money. This is why I never played Avengers on my Xbox. Im a huge Avengers fan, but the Spiderman dlc was enough to completely sour me to the game.
@Fenbops it's a small subscription fee now, but If MS keep going the way they are and corner most of the market then how long do you think it will stay like that? If they buy even more studios and developers!
I bet in the years to come that small fee could end up £30 a month or more. And I say this as gamepass subscriber. Healthy competition is good, a monopoly would ruin gaming.
@TheLightSpirit to read up on ps exclusive news, toilet tinker. Why are you here?
Didn't even download the demo. Just zero interest for this.
Yep I own a PC and have a couple years of Gamepass, I'll definitely be getting this day one, but ya definitely gonna tank on PS4/5, that being said as a loot shooter that relies on an online community to survive and microtransactions to become the bulk of its profit I'd say this is a pretty good move in such a crowded arena and I certainly can't complain
With the shortage of PS5s this is the sort of thing that may make people take notice if only it was a bigger game and Xbox Series consoles were easy to get hold of. If they start to put a few more third party releases on Game Pass day one Sony will have to respond.
It's not free. Game pass is $15 a month. That aside, I couldn't care less what crap they put on there. When Xbox can make something as good as God of War, The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, and the Uncharted Series, then I'll take notice.
Why don't sony make ps now there version of game pass would be a brilliant idea.
@leucocyte I have both a PS5 and Series X and just recently started reading this site and Pure Xbox. They’re sister sites but strangely, it only seems to be this one that does the fanboy baiting articles like this.
I like both consoles for different reasons so I ignore the bait but at least it’s entertaining to read comment sections like this!
I follow this page for the sake of news but sometimes it’s quite annoying how much you guys like to unnecessarily bash games.
Objectivity is definitely not a strength on this page.
I loved the demo. It’s like a B-movie. And a lot of people who love looters really like Outriders since it gets the loot right so far compared to all the other failures out there
I can def see this being either $30 or on PS+ within 12 months of post-release.
Still interested in playing though, for sure.
I don't even want to play this game for free. No interest in generic games like this one.
@tatsumi
I completely with you also the devs are quite friendly and pro consumers. If anything, this just tempts me more towards the disc version. I was still undecided because I got so spoiled with the PS5 silence that I'm reluctant leaving a noisy disc in it now.
Be prepared those boasting over Gamepass and all its games (free) lol, that price hike is coming trust that. They already tried with gold remember? With more time I can see GP being up to 40$ Plus a month. Trust it’s coming slowly but surely.
Microsoft can afford it. Their goal is to bleed out the competition the same way Amazon did it and Uber is trying to do it. Those companies have so much financial funds that after a while the competition will fade away. Same will happen here. Sony can’t afford a service like game pass. So we have to accept the truth that in the coming 10 years Sony will go down and Microsoft will dominate the gaming market and maybe with Nintendo being a profitable small gaming company. And after Microsoft destroyed the gaming market with billions of dollars they will without any competition left dictate the prices and what games will be released and also the quality of those games. And the gamers have to accept it due to no alternatives. Sony seems to be a big company, but they are no match against the financial resources of Microsoft. So everyone supporting game pass is actually helping Microsoft to become the Amazon of the gaming industry. I rather pay the 60-80 bucks then to surrender to Microsoft.
@Subsided Its not on Gamepass for PC, just console, also the game itself has no micro transactions at all. Its also not really an online shooter either. Its got online capabilities if you want to team up with mates or matchmaker for missions, thats it. Its a game with a beginning, middle and end and its all there at release.
@Hyperluminal that’s the way the modern world works. Same thing with “free healthcare” and “free collage” at a basic level. They tell you it’s free but in actuality you’re paying for it in other ways which will have an effect on the overall economy and how we create and get a hold of things we need/want.
I don't get the word: 'free'. It's totally misplaced. I just calculated I've paid 900 euros to Netflix the past 5 years. I'm not sure if I would have ever spend it on watching films in general? 10 dollars/euros a month for games sounds cheap, but really isn't on the long term (only if you're a hardcore gamer).
I already have the game pre-ordered for PS5 but I'm considering cancelling it. Can't resist playing it for free. Mainly for the story only and see how it goes. Can always get it for PS5 again another time when it's cheap or wait for it to enter PS+ if I like it enough.
I'd rather play it on the PS5 though but at least my Game Pass wouldn't go to waste since I haven't used it in a long time
Another terrible take from Sammy. What a surprise. First of all Outriders is a blast to play. You are supposed to pay the game super aggressively and use your abilities.
I agree with Skill up's take. And a lengthy game with no microstransactions should be commended. Secondly I love how you are just in awe of everything Microsoft does. Seriously, get a grip Sammy. Gamepass is not the end all be all. And it's far from perfect. It is going to have a severely negative impact on the industry. First things first, you don't own your games with Gamepass. To me that is a pretty big thing. You are just renting it. Secondly Gamepass may seem like a great deal to the consumer, but that value comes at a high cost. And that cost is it lowers the perceived value of games in the eyes of the consumer. Games cost many millions of dollars and several years to make and when you allow people to play them for 1 to 15 bucks a month, that is all they think they are worth. This going to hurt many developers big and small, particularly indie devs who want be able to recoup their production costs. Some may go out of business. For larger game devs, if they can't recoup their development costs, then they will become more and more risk averse. So we will get less and less new and creative ip's and instead get nothing but established franchise sequels, many of which will be first person shooters. So no, Gamepass is not that amazing. Finally if you want to see the games and the companies you love stick around you have got to support them financially. The price of games has not gone up for almost twenty years, despite inflation steadily rising. I really don't understand how people think Returnal does not look like a full priced game. It's got killer graphics, amazing gameplay, super replayability, 3d sounds, and fully supports the dualsense. I love Housemarque games and so will happily support them day one.
@JapaneseSonic - I don't recall this being about the OG Xbox or XBO. We're talking about the X|S which like it or not are selling like crazy and consistently out of stock.
Would you go as far as to say it will be a 'joke'?
@BadPlayerOne I think you’re being a bit dramatic here. What MS is doing today, is no different from what Sony did to Nintendo back in the day. Sony was the big tech company throwing money around. I remember people complaining about the move to disc media. Everyone turned out fine.
@Exlee300p I respectfully disagree. The Gamepass model might not be for everybody, but I love it, and I love the ability to browse and play games I otherwise wouldn’t have played. I don’t care at all about owning my games. I love playing games and moving onto the next one. In the rare case that I want to replay a game down the road, if it isn’t on GPU, I’ll probably be able to pick it up cheap. Television has gone the way of streaming, and people have adjusted to that model, and the streaming services are making much higher quality content than what I use to watch on tv 20 years ago. I also think that Sony fans would fully embrace this model if they offered it for PS owners. I have no problem paying for Sony’s 1st party titles. They are definitely worth the price of admission, but GPU has definitely caused me to primarily play on the Xbox.
@awp69 Agreed. I really enjoy both sites, but these are the articles that have the best comment sections to read. Push Square also has about 4x the traffic, so the comment sections are much more active.
Yes, I'm still buying it. I enjoyed the demo and I am looking forward to playing the rest of the game. I am also playing it in co-op with two of my friends, which makes the game much more fun and enjoyable.
I guess if you like to rent your games than it’s a good deal. I have game pass and its not as great as everyone likes to make it out to be. I can buy every game I would like to play on there on a sale and it would cost way less than a year subscription of game pass.
@Hypnotoad107 I agree that gamepass is brilliant value for money (at the moment) and gives you choice, I subscribe myself. But what @Exlee300p and @BadPlayerOne are maybe saying is that in the long run it could hurt gaming if MS continue on their current course unchecked. MS had a NET income of 42billion last year, they are a trillion dollar company. Yes Sony have bought developers before but not on the scale or consequence of the Bethesda deal. Imagine if MS buy ubisoft and take 2 next. What if they went mental and bought EA and took all the sports games, battlefield games away from Sony players. The casual gamers (which are the majority) would steer massively to the green side.
And you say that streaming TV is the future and the content is better, but that has a lot of competition, Netflix, Amazon, Disney, Sky in my country and many others. If MS got too big, had all the biggest games who would keep them honest? My bet would be prices go up and quality would go down.
But hey, hopefully regulation would stop them getting a monopoly and destroying the thing we all love, gaming.
@PaperAlien Same here. I too was seriously considering pre-ordering at the end of March but seeing this Game Pass mess put me off. Now I'll wait for a hefty price drop People Can Fly can go fly a kite.
@AllDaSportsALLOFDEM lil
Not to rub salt in the wounds but Octopath Traveler was just announced as coming to Xbox and day one GamePass on 3/25 as well.
(Undertale, already on PlayStation forever, also debuting on Xbox and GamePass).
Hi there fellow gamers.
I played and very much enjoyed the Outriders demo on my PS5 and on my PC (yes, I downloaded the demo for two different systems I own)
Yes, I will still buy the game for my PS5 on day one since I enjoyed myself way to much(16 hours already. 12 hours on PS5 and 4 hours on PC)
And no, I don´t think this game and other possible games ending up being on GP, is going to affect nor change all my future PS5 and PC purchases.
Why? Because I like to OWN my games. That´s it.
Cheers, stay safe and happy gaming to us all
I know the cutscenes were rough but I was under the impression that quite alot of people enjoyed the demo?
@Exlee300p Hi there friend.
I completely agree and share the same sentiment with certain aspects you just posted.
I think Outriders is a blast to play once you start to understand how the game works and plays (wich I didn´t in the first hour and a half)
But using the Tricster abilities is super fun.
First I teleport to the back of a group of enemies. Then I use my Time buble(it´s what I call it) to slow them down. Then I proced to shoot the living heck out of them and finish the last ones with Temporal Slice. Rinse and repeat. Like I said, super fun.
And that is just one class example. There´s 3 more to chose.
And then there is the Game pass issues:
We still don´t know if the developers can actualy get their due diligence of revenue or just some part of it. And that´s not good at all.
Housemarque has never failed me in terms of creating games with awesome fun and challanging gameplay.
Is it high priced? Maybe it is.
But players really need to stop complaining about this since they haven´t even played the game to make that kind of assumption.
Destruction Allstars? A online game only like Rocket League and Fall Guys? Yeah 80€ would be way to much for it.
But a single player, story driven, action packed and rogue like game, similar to what Hades was able to acomplish? And By Housemarque? I´m all in for this game.
Players should cheer that new gaming experiences are coming because of the new hardware, not complaining so much on pricing, even though it matters sometimes, as well as engaging in "console wars" that have no meaning wahtsoever.
Just my two cents on the matter.
Cheers, stay safe and gave a good one
@get2sammyb It shouldn't deter anyone. You don't own the games with gamespass. And if you don't have an xbox why would it matter?
@RaZieLDaNtE Couldn't agree more. It's funny I play with the trickster as well and do the same teleport trick with the sword slice. It really is stunning to me how cheap everyone is on this site. If you bought a 500 dollar console surely you can pay full price for a game. As I said people don't realize that good value to the consumer has to come out of the developers end. I sincerely feel gamepass is going to have a very detrimental affect on the industry. I really don't understand how people don't want to support games and companies they love by by buying their games at full price.
@Hypnotoad107 I am not dramatic it’s a cold calculated truth. Microsoft is making big losses with game pass with every game the offer. No other company can take this kind of loss for a longer period of time. But Microsoft can. They can keep this up for years to come. If Sony would join game pass it would be the end of them. Nobody would buy their gaming consoles anymore. Microsoft would then dictate the price Sony game developers would get for their games to be allowed on game pass. The same with independent studios. If they lose the alternative of Sony they would also have to submit to Microsoft to be allowed onto game pass. Game pass is a frontal attack on the gaming community. It’s developed to make all game developers dependent of game pass. And they use this honeypot of a low monthly fee to lure gamers away from the competition to force Sony and other game developers to accept their business concept. The same way Microsoft is still dominating the PC world for decades. Another example is Netscape. It was the best internet browser. Everybody used it. So what did Microsoft do the preinstalled Microsoft Explorer on every Windows version completely integrating it into the Windows system and gone was Netscape. Same idea same result.
@JapaneseSonic - You're right. I did, but you seemed to imply the X|S are barely selling. They're doing good numbers. Enough to keep Sony on their toes.
@Hypnotoad107 You can do the same thing on Playstation. Ps plus gives you the 20 classic games right of the bat. Which is amazing. Secondly Ps plus has been killer lately, and it is clear we are getting brand new games with it now. We also got some killer games like Control Ultimate Edition and FF 7 Remake. Finally there is Ps Now that has almost 1,000 games 330 of which are available for download. I have to laugh when certain stupid articles say that they can't find anything to play on Ps5. Insane.
@Exlee300p I absolutely agree with you on the Ps+. The free games lately have all been bangers. I already owned FF7 remake and Control Ultimate, but I popped them in the library anyway. I’m actually really excited to get to Maneater, but I’ve been busy Ghost of Tsushima. Xbox might as well drop their games with gold. The quality has gone to crap since they have put all their focus on GPU.
@BadPlayerOne I don’t agree with you here, but I respect your take. I think in the end, we know that Xbox was dying. I personally love their games. I think Gears is still great and looks beautiful. Ori and Sunset Overdrive were fantastic. The Forza series continues to impress. Sea of Thieves is a blast if you have friends to play with. BUT they still are viewed as having no games. They really needed to make a splash and do something disruptive to get noticed. I think they’ve done that with Bethesda and GP. We’ll see if it works out. Personally, GPU has been great for me, and to more people the subscribe, the more money they can put into the service. More games for less money is something I’m completely on board with. I still have my PS5 for all the cinematic experiences, though. God of War was my favorite game of the generation.
@Hypnotoad107 I still love my Xbox 360. Will never throw it away. I spent uncountable hours playing games on it. But since I own a PlayStation 4 I really know what good games are. Sure Xbox had some nice games, but they are nothing compared to PS exclusives like The Last of Us or Bloodborne or Ratchet and Clank just to mention a few. You cannot replace creativity with huge amounts of money. All those huge acquisitions have not yet created any great AAA games. Even Halo seems to turn into a disaster. I don’t mind for Microsoft to create great games. I even want them to. It stimulates creativity and the more great games we can play the better. But trying to control the complete gaming industry is just not the right way to do it. I play on my PS4, Nintendo Switch. Even my Xbox 360 from time to time. I don’t care as long as I can play good games. It’s all about games.
For me, this is a case where the demo hurt the product. I absolutely HATE saying that because I loved the idea of having a demo and want to reward studios that do that, but...this thing is ROUGH. Playing it on a PS5 and I had stutters at times, I had audio issues (a mini-boss that's making threats, at a whisper volume the entire time), and it just felt like it still needed some time to cook. For a game coming out this fall, it was a pretty awesome demo, but for a game coming in April? Yikes.
I also have an XBox One S and Game Pass (got it cheap when Gold converted to Game Pass Ultimate, and I bought three years at a discount for Gold), but I won't play this there - I can't imagine how painful it will be on that console. If I manage to find a Series X, I might reconsider, if it's still in Game Pass by then. Without news of how long it's in Game Pass, I'm worry that about the time I get hooked, it will be yanked.
I'll wait to see how initial patches are, and maybe give it a shot later. Then again, I loved Destiny 1 and haven't touched Destiny 2, even with the base game being free. There's only so much looter-shooter you can play.
games good ***** the nay sayers, they got my 60
@Hypnotoad107 remember the bluray vs hd dvd days? XD
@Papasears Man, Xbox really backed the wrong horse on that one, eh?
I turned off the demo after about 5 mins
@Northern_munkey that reminds me Avengers's next/new-gen version's out today! Guess I know what I'm doing this evening!
I mean, it's ANOTHER shooter. Unless it's absolutely phenomenal, I'd be reluctant to download it even with gamepass.
I'm just gonna wait for it on PS+
Personally I think this game is golden and Square had no faith in it. If they would've let it hit the streets and word of mouth take over pure money. The crafting system, the health recovery, drop rates, set pieces, People can Fly have done there homework. At first I was going to cancel my preorder (I had it since 19 E3 good ole Gamestop) but later felt why punish the devs for the publisher's greed. Again I'll take many of your wagers this game could be the next looter shooter to beat.
The demo was enough to tell me that I don't need to play this game even for 'free' on game pass. I've not got enough time to play sub par games.
@AdamNovice gamepass, the only thing xbox has going for it XD
@Saucymonk best looter shooter game coming, sub par IMO would be Destiny2, BL3, Div2, Godfall. Well see in the coming months...
@obiwan3001 (b '')b
@Papasears Yes we will.
